Kittery 375th Celebration features Seacoast West African Dance & Drum

Our wonderful friends at Seacoast Dance & Drum will be performing as part of Kittery's summer long celebration!

This is a free event, though if you'd like to donate to the performance you may do so through our ticket site.

Namory Keita was the lead drummer (djembefola) for his village of Sangbarala, Guinea before relocating to the United States. He teaches weekly classes at the Dance Hall in Kittery as well as in Portland, ME, and Cambridge, MA. He is an incredibly talented drummer and generous teacher who brings joy to all his students.

Liz Fowler has been dancing since she was a young girl. She has a BA in Dance Studies from Connecticut College and was first introduced to West African Dance as a student in 1991. Since then, she has studied with teachers from Mali and Guinea including Mohamed Kalifa Kamara, Mohamed Joh Camara, Sidiki Sylla, Abdoulaye Sylla, Papin Camara, and Youssouf Koumbassa. She has traveled to Guinea to study dance intensively five times and is looking forward to dancing there again soon. In the meantime, she is grateful for the opportunity to share this dance form and some about the culture of Guinea with people around the Seacoast.

Weekly classes with Namory and Liz are open to anyone, beginners or long-time students. Outside of his weekly classes, Namory can be found collaborating with other artists from Guinea and even Ghana all around New England and more for performances and instruction.
