A new date will be announced soon, please stay tuned!

ALL-AGES | ALL-ABILITY LEVELS | MOVEMENT WORKSHOP

Danza Orgánica will be offering a public workshop, hosted by The Dance Hall, as part of their Dance for Social JusticeTM workshop series. Founded in 2014, the Dance for Social JusticeTM (DSJ) workshop grew out of Mar Parrilla’s desire to use dance as a tool for social change. While she was teaching dance in urban settings, she organically provided her students with dance composition tools with which they explored themselves and their connection to communities.

The DSJ curriculum is informed by Paulo Freire’s philosophy of education as expressed in Pedagogy of the Oppressed, her studies on dance composition, and her experience as a performer and choreographer in the diaspora.

*This performance is funded in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.

POSTPONED! Danza Orgánica

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED

CUERPX focuses on the imprints of colonialism and patriarchy in the body. We are looking at the body as the human body, and also the Earth body. How do we embody liberated realities? How does that look like within the context of colonized bodies? What is the work we need to do to get to an internal liberated space that leads to collective liberation?

Danza Orgánica is a Boston-based dance theater company whose work is centered around equity, social justice, and decolonization. Through Danza Orgánica, we create the world we want to live in as BIPOC. Our values are rooted in antiracist social justice, and decolonization. We envision a world where all living beings are valued, and Mother Earth is in balance. Our legacy is one of opening doors for others, creating spaces for artistic expression, and leaving a body of work carefully created to shed light upon our human experience, and that of our collaborators.

Taíno Afroborikua and award-winning choreographer Mar Parrilla is the founding artistic director of Danza Orgánica (DO). She the proud mother of Caleb, an interdisciplinary movement artist, an educator, and a community organizer. Mar is the founder of the acclaimed program Dance for Social Justice™, as well as the founding producer of the acclaimed Boston-based annual festival: We Create!. Parrilla is a luminary artist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where she has been commissioned to create artistic work- and continues to collaborate with in several capacities. Danza Orgánica is also collaborating with Puerto Rico-based artists on an ongoing cultural exchange towards the continued development of Melaza: a project that explores the colonial relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States of North America. 2024 David Surette Mandolin Festival

2024 David Surette Mandolin Festival

Join us for the David Surette Mandolin Festival kick-off concert! Featuring performances by Carlo Aonzo, Dan Bui, Joe K. Walsh, Keith Murphy, and special guests Susie and Julianna Burke. Don't miss this stellar lineup of musicians who, between them, cover many musical styles. All well versed in tradition, these talented players also bring tradition into new places.

Carlo Aonzo’s first teacher in his native Savona, Italy was his father Giuseppi, who instilled in him a love and respect for the mandolin and classical mandolin music that has remained with him all his life.  Carlo has performed and taught workshops and seminars and collaborated with orchestras all over the world.  He plays in many styles other than classical, including bluegrass and jazz, and has recorded with the Carlo Aonzo Trio,  David Grisman, and many others. Carlo runs his own mandolin camps in Italy, to which he invited David Surette to teach in 2018 and 2019. Since 2020, Carlo has created and produced a series of short documentaries on the history of the mandolin, "L'Italia dei 1000 Mandolini" (the 1,000 mandolins of Italy.) *Listen here*

Hailing from the vast suburbs of Houston Texas, Dan Bui currently makes his home in Cambridge, MA where he plays the mandolin in a variety of Boston and New England bands. Dan is a member of the festival-favorite quartet Twisted Pine, of which Red Line Roots says, "Each member of this band is a runaway freight train of talent." He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, where he studied with acoustic luminaries like John McGann, Darol Anger, Joe Walsh, and Jason Anick. *Listen here*

Roots music isn't made in a vacuum. It's the creation of a community, of a circle of friends, of a teacher and a student. It’s something to be passed back and forth to be treasured. As an acclaimed master of American roots music, mandolinist and songwriter Joe K. Walsh knows this better than most. He’s toured with countless artists, collaborated with other master musicians like Darol anger and the Gibson Brothers, founded progressive stringband Joy Kills sorrow in the early 2000s, and is currently on faculty at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. His new album, Borderland, is an exercise in subtlety and careful creation. Turning through songs he wrote, or setting the words of Yeats to music, and picking out instrumental tunes of his own creation, Walsh plays and sings with the kind of ease that comes from years of practice and creation. *Listen here*

A native of Newfoundland, Keith Murphy’s traditional song repertoire is based in Eastern Canada and Quebec as well as his current home, Vermont. His direct and intimate style of traditional singing in English and French infuses old ballads and songs with a powerful immediacy while his rhythmic and percussive finger style of guitar playing brings new shape and color to his songs. His 2005 album, Bound for Canaan showcased his refined sense of balance between innovation and tradition while Suffer No Loss (2014) is a beautifully spare recording in the style of early classic recordings of the traditional English and Celtic music revival. His most recent solo recording is  Land of Fish and Seals (2018) – an ever tasteful mix of traditional and tradition-inspired songs in English and French with an impressive list of guest artists – Becky Tracy, Yann Falquet, Pascal Gemme, Rani Arbo and Mark Roberts. *Listen here*

Susie Burke played, toured and recorded with her husband David Surette for nearly 35 years.  David always had Susie back him up and sing a few songs at Mando fest, and Susie is happy to be carrying on the festival with her daughters and CCMS. She will be joined in the concert by her and David’s daughter, singer Julianna Burke.

Latin Dance Night w/Lookie Lookie

Latin Dance Night w/Lookie Lookie

Latin Dance Night with Lookie Lookie

Lookie Lookie is an eight piece band devoted to Latin Bugalu, a style pioneered by Puerto Rican musicians in New York in the 1960s. Fusing rhythm and blues and American pop into the Afro-Caribbean music matrix, such artists as Pete Rodriguez, Joe Cuba and Richie Ray topped the Latin charts in the US and Latin America. Joe Cuba even scored on the pop charts with “Bang Bang” and “Sock It To Me Baby.” Bugalú is the mother lode of fun, and Lookie Lookie has been wowing club and festival crowds all over New England with it.

The members of Lookie Lookie have distinguished pedigrees in the Boston and international music scenes. Leader, saxophonist and vocalist Russ Gershon has performed at the Sanctuary previously with his Grammy-nominated jazz group the Either/Orchestra; E/O conguero and vocalist Vicente Lebron, who has played with the greats from Celia Cruz on down leads the rhythm section; timbales player Rick Barry toured for years in Bim Skala Bim, an essential band on the 1980s US ska scene; percussionist Ken Winokur founded the internationally recognized silent film accompaniment group the Alloy Orchestra; bassist Gregory Ryan has played with jazz great Billy Harper and Harold Mabern; vocalist/percusionist Jorge Arce is has been a force in Puerto Rico and Boston for forty years; saxophonist/flutist Ted DeColo has toured with Mighty Sam McLean; the group is rounded out by trumpeter Eric Ortiz.

On top of all the instruments are the voices. In the tradition of folk musics like Puerto Rican Bomba and even garage rock, which was an ingredient in the original bugalú, all the members of Lookie Lookie sing, in chorus (“coro” in Spanish) and by passing lead vocals around, in Spanish and English. Fun is the heartbeat of Lookie Lookie – the musicians delight in conjuring the psychedelic vibe of the 1960s while anchoring it in heavy Latin grooves at tempos that everybody can dance to. You don't need salsa chops or double jointed hips to get out on the floor and bugalu, and if you don't feel like dancing – there's plenty of musical substance for your ears.

NOTE TO DANCERS: Please choose a "Standing" ticket. There will be seating available specifically for dancers to catch a breath! This helps us keep the dance floor open while accommodating non-dancers.

Soggy Po Boys

Soggy Po Boys

"Although New Hampshire isn’t the most obvious home for a group so devoted to the culture of The Big Easy, the Soggy Po’ Boys seem genuine in their ambition to spread the word about jazz New Orleans style, and they’re creating an accessible and fun way into this world."

-London Jazz News

The Soggy Po Boys, native to New England, have quickly become an institution. They are spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it's celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes, from the street to the theater.

The Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz, the band includes traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean), as well as Meters funk, soul, and brass band / street beat music. “...These guys have done their homework, worked it out on the bandstand and put in the hours in the studio. It all adds up to a party you can bring with you when you want to treat your friends to a real good time.” -Ben Schenck of New Orleans’ Panorama Jazz Band”.

There are a myriad of traditions that flow into New Orleans culture just as there are tributaries that feed the Mississippi, and the Po Boys are eager to explore what makes the music of New Orleans so damn special. You’ll hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound across the band and in the stories told by their original tunes. Despite the scope of its sound, the outfit is only seven people, and thrives on the interplay and group dynamics that bring this music to life.

The Soggy Po Boys are:

Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

“Guitarist Marc Ribot’s wildest project doesn’t mess around. The guitar legend, with bassist Shahzad Ismaily, and drummer Ches Smith, merges funk backbeats with the taut chaos of Sonic Youth and flashes of Woodstock Santana.”—New York Magazine

On the band’s 5th studio release, Connection, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog have pushed their long-brewing tension between traditional pop songcraft and avantgarde improvisational music to the breaking point, bridging their customary genre-agnostic approach with elements of glam boogie, minimalist disco, psychedelic boogaloo, garage-punk-against-the-machine agitprop, and so much more.

“Ceramic Dog, a power trio of jazz geniuses who inflect literate rock with formidable chops. The synthesis is frenetic, potent, and at odds with the zeitgeist, even if Ribot’s lyrics decry today’s political oppression: Musically, he rejects both the voguish and the virtuosic in favor of his own whims…His progressive sentiments are welcome, and unfortunately more relevant than ever.”

Paolo Angeli

The Dance Hall is thrilled to present Sardinian Guitarist, Paolo Angeli!

Whatever you want to call it, nobody else is doing it quite like this. Paolo Angeli, the Sardinian sorcerer, manually magics beautiful, multi-layered music from his unique prepared guitar: a hybrid orchestra of an instrument with strings going in all directions, foot-pedal-controlled motorised propellers and hammers to create shimmering drones and bass-lines as he bows, strikes, plucks and strums while producing rhythmic atmospherics by treading on a plastic bag and adjusting tunings on the fly. Electronic effects are utilized but no loops. All is live.

With this singular instrument he improvises and composes unclassifiable music, suspended between traditional music of Sardinia, jazz, baroque, post-folk and pre-everything else. Paolo sold out a concert at Carnegie Hall (New York) as well as two nights at SFJazz in Los Angeles and has collaborated with Pat Metheny - for whom he built a guitar - Fred Frith, Hamid Drake, Louis Sclavis, etc.

“…A sound explorer and artistic orchestrator, Paolo Angeli is known for playing a prepared Sardinian Guitar, a crossbreed instrument provided with additional strings with are bowed or plucked, an added bridge, pedal operated hammers and pick ups. Visionary, multilayered and challenging, Angeli’s music really Sardinian traditional modes, ambient, free improvisation, post-rock and much more. Angeli weaves a unique aesthetic and Jar’a is a great achievement…” Ciro De Rosa - Songlines

Pine Tree Flyers

Pine Tree Flyers

Four of the finest voices in New England's traditional music scene shine a renewed light on the tunes of the Northeast with excitement and respect. From festival stages and concert halls to raucous August nights at fiddle camp, the Flyers are here to make sure New England music has a seat at the table as a distinct and vital American tradition. All residents of Portland, Maine, Katie McNally (fiddle), Emily Troll (accordion), Owen Marshall (guitar), and Neil Pearlman (piano) cut their teeth playing for contra dances and learning from the greats. Individually, they've toured the world playing Irish, Scottish, and Quebecois music and they bring this wellspring of knowledge and technical prowess to the American music that was born from these traditions.

Each member of the band brings years of experience and dedication to their craft: Marshall and Pearlman have taught at Maine Fiddle Camp since they were teens, Troll plays in the acclaimed contra dance band Anadama, and McNally performed for over a decade with New England supergroup Childsplay. Momentum is growing for the Flyers and in their first year as a band, they’ve toured internationally and domestically, gracing the stages of festivals such as Celtic Colours, Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Celtic Connections, and playing concerts and dances across their home state of Maine.

While New England tunes may not be well known outside of the Northeastern United States, the Flyers are proving that their musical heritage is as vibrant and vital as any American folk tradition.

Jazz Casual: Charlie Kohlhase Explorer's Club

Charlie Kohlhase Explorers Club

Record Release: A Second Life

The Explorers Club holds space for forebears like the great unsung pianist and composer Elmo Hope, whose darkly hued “Eyes So Beautiful as Yours” serves as a bari sax feature, with lush orchestration and tasteful, outside-the-box comping from Hofbauer on guitar. The brass (plus guitar) take the lead initially on the hymn-like “Berlin Ballad” by John Tchicai, followed by reeds, percussion and arco bass. “Man on the Moon,” an obscurity from the Don Cherry/Ornette Coleman universe, is an uptempo rollercoaster, beginning with sci-fi sonic abstraction, then erupting into the main theme (which bears some resemblance to Mingus’s “Boogie Stop Shuffle”). Roswell Rudd’s “Tetractys” provides an ingenious ending: one by one, each player drops out to sing the catchy four-bar line, until the Explorers Club becomes an Explorers Choir, united in harmony and joyous, relaxed swing.

At the ready on alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, the venerated Boston-based improviser and composer Charlie Kohlhase ascends the proverbial podium to lead his Explorers Club on the new Mandorla Music release A Second Life. Behind the title is a tale of survival, as Kohlhase reveals that he became infected with HIV in 2015. “I feel like I am living a ‘second life’ now,” he writes in his liner notes, “and am grateful for the excellent medical treatment that I’ve received here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This album is dedicated to the 40 million people who have died of AIDS without the benefit of modern treatment, which in some parts of the world continues today, and particularly to those closest to me: Brian Combs, Lionel Cuffie, Barry Savage and Calvan Vail.”

A Second Life is the work of an artist brimming with spirit, the will to live and keep creating. “After I gathered up the courage to come out to my fellow musicians,” Kohlhase writes, “my jazz community has been very open and accepting to me. Aside from a small circle of friends, I have not been that active a member of my gay community. … However, after revealing my status to a young, queer jazz musician he said, ‘I need to talk to you, because so many of your generation died.’ I realized that younger queer folk might need to hear my story, and I’ve made it my business of late to be more available to that community. Maybe I can bring more of my community to jazz music, which I feel, in many ways, saved my life.”

“Much love and many thanks to my fellow Explorers,” writes Kohlhase in his notes. “I’ve been playing music with Curt for more than 30 years and with Dan and Eric for more than 20. I’ve long felt that I could play on the oddest part of the beat or make any kind of sound without fazing them in the slightest. Jeb, Josiah, Seth and Tony are more recent additions but there’s a similar feeling that I can take it as far ‘in’ or ‘out’ as I wish and they’ll be there with me.”

ABOUT CHARLIE KOHLHASE:

Charlie Kohlhase moved to Boston from his native New Hampshire in 1980, following private studies with Stan Strickland and Roswell Rudd. In 1989 he formed the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet, which worked around Boston and toured nationally for a dozen years. He currently leads The Explorers Club as well as the Saxophone Support Group, a woodwind octet that plays saxophone-oriented compositions by Kohlhase, Julius Hemphill, Steve Lacy and John Tchicai. Kohlhase co-led groups with Tchicai for New England tours in 1993, 1997, 1998, 2003 and 2006; additional performance and recording credits include Leroy Jenkins and Anthony Braxton’s Genome Project.

Kohlhase was a member of Boston’s Either/ Orchestra from 1987 to 2001, playing throughout North America, Europe and Russia. He rejoined the group in 2008, collaborating witih Ethiopian jazz greats Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke, Alemayhu Eschete and Teshome Mitiku in venues ranging from Chicago to London, Toronto to Germany and Holland to Ethiopia. He currently directs the No Boundaries Big Band and the JCM Art Ensemble at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, and has long been active in jazz radio, most recently hosting “Research & Development” Monday afternoons on WMBR-FM in Cambridge.

Vintage Vocal Quartet

The Vintage Vocal Quartet is coming to fill your ears and your heart with the sweet swinging harmonies of the Swing Era, when jazz music and pop music were one and the same. It was a time when every radio blared out music that was danceable yet sophisticated.

The Vintage Vocal Quartet sings while playing piano, guitar, bass and trombone/drums, dialed in to the sound of groups like Glenn Miller’s Modernaires, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Andrews Sisters, and Tommy Dorsey’s Pied Pipers, as well as singers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.

The Vintage Vocal Quartet has been delighting concert audiences and lindy hoppers all over New England. These four performers provide their own accompaniment on piano, bass, guitar and trombone/drums to complement their powerful harmony vocals.

When founder David Thorne Scott did a tour performing with the legendary Four Freshmen, he saw that vintage music — sassy and sweet, danceable and sophisticated — hits the spot for 21st century audiences. He came home to Boston and called up guitarist Paul Pampinella of the groundbreaking a cappella group Vox One and pianist Taylor O’Donnell, whose versatile voice can deliver jazz to funk with a whisper to a wail. Add trombonist and swing drummer Chris Humphrey and you've got yourself a four piece harmony machine.

Alasdair Fraser + Natalie Haas

The musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser, "the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling," and brilliant Californian cellist, Natalie Haas, spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. Over the last 16 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding, and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

This seemingly unlikely pairing of fiddle and cello is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser. His search eventually led him to find a cellist who could help return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music, where it stood for hundreds of years before being relegated to the orchestra. The duo's debut recording, Fire & Grace, won the coveted the Scots Trad Music "Album of the Year" award, the Scottish equivalent of a Grammy. Since its release, the two have gone on to record three more critically acclaimed albums that blend a profound understanding of the Scottish tradition with cutting-edge string explorations. In additional to performing, they both have motivated generations of string players through their teaching at fiddle camps across the globe.

"Fraser, one of the most respected of all exponents of the Scots fiddle, would look long and hard to find a more appropriate cellist as a partner...A positive joy." — The Scotsman

Celia Woodsmith + Jason Anick Trio

Celia Woodsmith and Jason Anick Trio

Singer-songwriter Celia Woodsmith and violin virtuoso Jason Anick front this newly minted supergroup with bassist Charles Clements. They will perform an array of roots-inspired originals, country classics, western swing, and bluegrass music. These globe-trotting musicians have crossed paths at festivals all over the world with their respective projects (Della Mae, Lonely Heartstring Band, Rhythm Future Quartet) and are excited to share the stage for this special collaboration.

Celia Woodsmith is a GRAMMY-nominated performer, vocalist, and songwriter. The daughter of the Vermont-based poet Sybil Smith, she is influenced by artists such as John Prine, Janis Joplin, and Mahalia Jackson. Woodsmith’s performances can be described as “one of a kind: gritty, muscular, folksy and intimate sometimes all at once” (Bluegrass Situation). Not confined by genre she is as comfortable playing Bill Monroe as she is singing an old jazz standard or a Led Zeppelin rocker. Woodsmith recently

spoke about her experiences with travel and music at TEDx Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, NH.

Berklee College of Music Professor Jason Anick, has earned a reputation among string players as an imaginative improviser, versatile composer, and insightful educator. As a band-leader, Anick has launched a variety of musical projects over the years, including the Gypsy Jazz group Rhythm Future Quartet, an Americana-inspired Acoustic Trio, and a contemporary jazz ensemble with pianist Jason Yeager. A versatile musician and sought after side-man, Anick has also shared the stage with an array of artists like Stevie Wonder, Tommy Emmanuel, Hamilton de Holanda, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band, John Sebastian, Delta Rae, and Ward Hayden and the Outliers. Taylor O'Donnell + Mike Effenberger

Taylor O'Donnell + Mike Effenberger

The indie jazz duo of Taylor O'Donnell and Mike Effenberger feeds on the joyful apposition of the 'legit' musical worlds of the 20th century (the Great American Songbook and post-classical music) against that unhallowed ground of the popular music of its odd-numbered decades, all viewed from the lens of what jazz means in the 2020s. They are through with the bending of genres and instead seek to shake them to death. Listeners are as likely to encounter surrealist reimaginings of Elliot Smith's wise angst as they are the Pixies' punk rage. Vincent Persichetti's sonic riddles are presented equally with Paul Simon's unlikely transcendence of the mundane into the sublime. The result is a completely singular musical perspective focused on melody, gesture, and aural storytelling.

Known for her exploratory use of vocal color and texture, and sincere delivery in her musical stylings, Taylor O’Donnell is a contemporary vocalist, educator, and conductor who uses her roots in R&B, folk, jazz, rock, and classical music to communicate her musical dialogue. Growing up in Colorado and living all over the country from Florida to Maine, her performing experience has taken her from playing with her own jazz trio on cruise ships and throughout New England to performing as a guest artist with symphony orchestras. Her musical diversity informs her deep love for vocal improvisation and for exploring a plethora of sounds and colors to connect more deeply to her audience.

Mike Effenberger has been living in the NH Seacoast since 2007. He received the Young Beacon in Jazz award from New School University in New York City, from which he graduated in 2005. While there, he studied with diverse artists including Jane Ira Bloom, Kenny Werner, John Hollenbeck, Reggie Workman, Fred Hersch, and Joanne Brackeen. Mike has curated an unmistakably individual voice that draws equally on gospel, minimalism, jazz, and 20th century music. Playing throughout New England with a variety of bands including Soggy Po Boys, fiveighthirteen, Jazzputin and the Jug Skunks, the secular roots and gospel choir Rock My Soul, and Sad Bastards / Loose Standards, Effenberger also leads Weird Turn Pro, which plays his original music. When not in the northeast, Mike performs internationally with the minimalist cult favorite Bing and Ruth. Mike appears on countless recordings from independent releases to larger labels, including 4AD and RVNG Intl, and is also active as a producer. His work has been written about in international publications including the Paris Review, The Guardian, and Pitchfork, as well as appearing on nationally syndicated media including NPR's All Things Considered and PRX's Echoes.

Liz Frame & the Kickers

"This woman writes great songs and has the pipes to deliver them."

— Elmore Magazine

Liz Frame wrote her first song at age nine and has been performing her own brand of Americana music since her early teens. Her efforts have paid off in exciting ways — nights in prestigious rooms and strong praise from respected sources — as she wins the hearts and minds of audiences and the industry alike. Giants like Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt have been evoked while describing her voice, and her writing has been compared to veterans like Dolly Parton and Lucinda Williams, among others. When not performing solo, she is backed live by her band, the Kickers — John Webb on lead guitar, Marjorie Senet on guitar and vocals, Jake Davis on bass, Max Chase on keys, and Jarrett Osborn on drums — talented friends whose musicianship help to deliver her material with distinction.

Ms. Frame released her first full-length recording, Sooner, in 2011 that drew strong praise, followed by the ep, Justine, which continued to highlight her skills as a singer and writer. Her 2018 full-length release, Sparrow in a Shoebox, won her still more fans and acclaim, charting on the AMA Top 200, and her 2021 release, Firefly, has continued her trajectory.

Kotoko Brass

Inspired by the traditional drum rhythms of Ghana, Kotoko Brass has created a unique, joyful, and improvisational style of West African dance music described by the BostonGlobe as “propulsive, infectious party music”. The drums provide the heart and soul of Kotoko Brass — merging syncopated African percussion polyrhythms with hard-hitting dance grooves on the drum set. The horns blend traditional sounds of New Orleans with the famous West African brass band sound heard from Ghana to Nigeria, and the guitar, keys, and bass evoke classic African and Caribbean styles of highlife, afro beat, and reggae.

A celebratory and energetic synthesis of music, people, and cultures fromaround the world, Kotoko Brass features musicians from Ghana, Antigua, Japan, and the United States playing together in unity. Kotoko Brass has shared the stage with An-gelique Kidjo, Red Baraat, Femi Kuti, the California Honeydrops, Vieux Farka Toure, In-nov Gnawa, Take 6, the Boston Pops, Rubblebucket, and more.

Michael Ofori (percussion) is a multifaceted performing artist from Ghana — his creative interests lie in African performing arts traditions including drumming, acting, and directing.

Ben Paulding (drum set) is an American percussionist who extensively lived and trained in Kumasi, Ghana, and now directs the Fafali Ghanaian drum and dance ensemble at Brandeis University.

Brian Paulding (trombone) has traveled the world playing pop, soul, reggae, and calypso music in Turkey, Tunisia, Georgia, Germany, Trinidad, Canada, and across the United States.

POSTPONED Wizzardess w/ Earthkit

Wizzardess w/EarthKit

Wizzardess is a sludgy stoner pop quartet armed with a dual guitar aural assault (Jon McCormack and Stu Dias), backed by the demonic rhythm section of Rick Habib (drums) and Mike Klempa (bass). It’s an accessible bit of heavy fit to tingle spines and loosen up stiffened necks. Think Thin Lizzy steeped in a broth of soul braised from the ashes of The Sword. And if you’ve heard of neither of these bands, think about a Sabbathian fueled Queens of the Stone Age circa late-'90s riding into battle on the back of a black, fire-breathing unicorn.

Jesse Dold and Sean Daniels are the rock band duo called EarthKit. All audio you hear is created simultaneously.....on the spot. This includes drums, bass, synth, guitars and vocals. They have challenged themselves to make as much noise as two guys can, with zero to minimal overdubs in their recordings.

Their debut album EVOLITION is available now on all steaming platforms.

PowerMoneyCake plays Steely Dan

PowerMoneyCake plays stripped down yet faithful versions of the entire Steely Dan catalog. This time around they will be playing the labrum Pretzel Logic in its entirety, plus a smattering of hits and deep cuts spanning their career. We'll also have special guest Josh DiJoseph joining us on electric guitar.

If you love Steely Dan, you’ll love PowerMoneyCake. It’s that simple.

The band:

Rick Habib: drums and vocals (Dreadnaught, Diaspora Radio, Wheel of Awesome, Kate Redgate Band)

Bob Lord: bass guitar (Dreadnaught)

Sky Rubins: electric guitar (Trade)

Chris Sink: keyboards (Trade, Queen City Soul, Amorphous Band)

People often ask us why we named a Steely Dan tribute Power Money Cake. The truth is that the band name has nothing to do with Steely Dan. We started as a band doing mostly odd covers that we didn't have an outlet for in other bands (Bob Lord came up with the tagline "Music for very few occasions"). By this date in 2012 we had crossed the threshold into a "mostly Steely Dan" cover band. I kept suggesting more Steely Dan tunes and the guys - god bless them - were receptive. By the end of the year it's all we did.

SWING BLUES: THE BACKSTORY

The 1930s were halcyon days for Swing music, but not just for the likes of big bands like Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Lunceford, and the Dorsey Brothers. There were literally hundreds of small Swing combos from trios to octets, each with its own unique take on the music that dominated the market during the height of the Great Depression. The list of artists who led small combos include Tiny Grimes, Slim Galliard, Billie Holiday, and Fats Waller. In addition to these groups, several important vocal harmony groups were also active on the scene, including the Cats and the Fiddle, the Mills Brothers, the Ink Spots, and the Spirits of Rhythm. Evolving out of New Orleans jazz and ragtime stylings, Swing music was fueled by the improvisational and rhythmic innovations of soloists like Louis Armstrong and Coleman Hawkins. It remains primarily dance music.

Sad Bastards / Loose Standards

Performance / Q&A (workshop)

Area men Chris Klaxton and Mike Effenberger join forces to plumb the depths of the great American songbook of jazz standards, the lesser American songbook, spirituals, new standards, and the good and bad news of this post-tonal musical world.*

SBLS aims to provide audiences with a proper blend of "Saturday Night" and "Sunday Morning", bridging the gap from The Club to The Church, thereby extending an invitation to share sacred moments, whether through traditional jazz standards, the music of today, spirituals and hymns, or the avant garde.

*“To plumb the depths” comes from the concept of lowering a lead weight into the ocean on a long rope to establish the water’s distance downward. To do so one would be required to drop the weight to the very bottom, extending the line entirely until the answer is found. May it be so.

The evening's performance will culminate in a Q+A session, through which Effenberger and Klaxton would be happy to speak on their particular take on the intersection of secular and sacred, as well as provide insights into their arranging process for jazz standards, modern radio favorites, and liturgical music.

GA-20

"100%Blues....A pure marvel and delight."

--RollingStone

GA-20 clearly is on to something big. It’s a movement, a new traditional blues revival. The dynamic, throwback blues trio are disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric blues we love.” Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman have been at the forefront of this traditional blues revival since they first formed in 2018. It’s no wonder they skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Blues Chart.

According to Stubbs, “Since we started the band we’ve focused on the story, the melody, and on creating a mood. Playing live as much as we do, we’re finding more and more that people are discovering how cool it all is. Traditional country, soul and funk music have all had these massive recent revivals, but traditional blues so far has not.” With their new Colemine album, Crackdown, and an intensive tour schedule, that’s all about to change.

"If you care to know how a rowdy 1950s Chicago juke joint sounded, GA-20 are here to help. They keep things simple and fierce...scything, growling riffs, driving grooves, blistering boogies and defiant vocals."

Max Roach's Centennial Celebration: Christine Correa Ensemble

The NYC-based, Christine Correa Ensemble will highlight Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite and Percussion Bitter Sweet in order to celebrate the creative and activist legacy of Max Roach, a high profile artist who was an outspoken civil rights advocate and used the arts as a catalyst for change.

For Correa and her ensemble, honoring Roach’s work means approaching his innovative music and powerful performances with deep reverence and sympathy. As such, the ensemble's goal is to stay as true to the spirit of the music as possible by returning to the powerful emotional and creative content with sincerity and artfulness.

After the performance, there will be an opportunity for the audience to converse with the musicians, which aims to not only shed light on the historical and social context that informed Roach’s work, but will also provide an opportunity for audiences to reflect on their experiences of this work and its relevance in the present moment.

More on Max Roach :

Max Roach is a musician whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. His career was an epic musical journey – from the revolutionary Jazz of the 1940s to the Civil Rights years, through experiments in hip hop, multi-media works, and beyond.

The music of Abdullah Ibrahim

Join us for a night of the music of iconic South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim. His compositions reflect many of the musical influences of his childhood in the multicultural port areas of Cape Town, ranging from traditional African songs to the gospel of the AME Church and Ragas, to more modern jazz and other Western styles. The band will attempt to recreate and reimagine some of the compositions by this legendary figure.

The band:

Stu Dias-Guitar

Eric Klaxton-Sax

Michael Sabin-Trombone

Andrew Strout-Keys

Rob Gerry-Bass

Eric Von Oyen-Drums

About Abdullah Ibrahim

Abdullah Ibrahim, South Africa’s most distinguished pianist and a world-respected master musician, was born in 1934 in Cape Town and baptized Adolph Johannes Brand. His early musical memories were of traditional African Khoi-san songs and the Christian hymns, gospel tunes and spirituals that he heard from his grandmother, who was pianist for the local African Methodist Episcopalian church, and his mother, who led the choir. The Cape Town of his childhood was a melting-pot of cultural influences, and the young Dollar Brand, as he became known, was exposed to American jazz, township jive, CapeMalay music, as well as to classical music. Out of this blend of the secular and the religious, the traditional and the modern, developed the distinctive style, harmonies and musical vocabulary that are inimitably his own.

Jon Nolan + Good Co. w/ Laura Fox

Jon Nolan lives in the milltown of Newmarket, NH, where summers are a brief reprieve from months of cold and snow. There are two muddy weeks the locals call “spring.” Autumn is nice. Crisp air makes the coffee even better. Still a frontman of New England alt-country champs Say ZuZu (Strolling Bones/New West), Nolan explores the dreamier, pop-infused parts of his Americana sensibility in his solo material with his band Good Company. Friends Geoff Taylor (bass), Zach Tremblay (guitar) and Rick Habib (drums) accidentally formed Good Co. behind a new batch of Nolan songs in a barn in the summer of 2022. Roland Nicol (pedal steel) was kidnapped and added to the lineup the following year to round out the sound. The new Jon Nolan & Good Co. album (Nolan’s third) is due in early 2024.

The band:

  • Whitney Roy, vocals (Old Hat Stringband, Fox + Roy, The Hazel Project)

  • Jim Dozet, electric guitar (Tourist Attraction, Crown Jules, Press Project)

  • Roland "LeFox" Nicol, bass (Rhye, Rusty Boys, Jon Nolan & Good Co)

  • Rick Habib, drums (The Kate Redgate Band, Jon Nolan & Good Co, North Village)

The collaboration with her band has helped to reshape and grow her songs, bringing in a dynamic nuance—a rich, rhythmic reframe.

Their performances are always light-hearted and heartfelt featuring original folk songs, Americana, and classics.

They’re joined for this show by Nashville singer-songwriter Ariana Hodes, (yes, a close relation!) who tore up the indie country charts a while back and writes really catchy songs about love and love lost. Django in Brazil: Jason Anick and Ian Coury Trio

Violinist Jason Anick and bandolim virtuoso Ian Coury join forces for this special concert. Accompanied by bassist Greg Loughman, they will perform a mix of choro music from Brazil and toe-tapping swing in the spirit of Django Reinhardt.

Berklee College of Music Professor Jason Anick, has earned a reputation among string players as an imaginative improviser, versatile composer, and insightful educator. Growing up playing fiddle tunes with his family and classical music with local orchestras, he developed a passion for improvisation, which led him to study jazz and classical music at Hartt Conservatory. In 2008, Anick started what would be a 10 year stint touring and recording with Grammy award-winning guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson while still a senior at Hartt Conservatory.

Having shared a stage with Brazilian choro legends Armandinho and Hamilton de Holanda by the age of 12, Ian Coury has since been accruing professional awards and accolades and is already, at 20 years old, one of Brazil’s most-respected virtuosos of the 10-string mandolin. As he continues to push the boundaries of the instrument and of the choro genre, he has performed with such luminaries as Paquito D’Rivera, Claudio Roditi, and Toninho Horta, and in the past two years has received two important awards: “Best Instrumentalist” in the National FM Radio Festival (2020), and second place (by popular vote) in Brazil’s eFestival (2021), both for performances of original compositions.

The Band:

Jason Anick – Violin

Ian Coury – Bandolim
